Action Comics vol.1 #45 - Cover date February 1942
Superman stories, in the early years, fit a few themes: Superman versus nature, Superman versus world-conquering villain, Superman as Cyrano, and then lastly Superman as guardian angel and Superman versus the corrupt.
This issue of Action starts and ends with Superman playing guardian angel to a destitute zookeeper. While in Africa loading up on interesting specimens for the attraction-less institution, Superman finds himself facing off against a great white hunter who’s been staging murder-hunts at his jungle plantation. It’s an unusual story for the time if just because it creates an A-story and B-story, and winds the two otherwise unrelated instances together, an indicator of Jerry Siegel’s increasing skill as a writer.
